Downloading sample databases
Server 2008.
As I often find to be the case, http://www.codeplex.com is not available. I
have reported this on the codeplex forums in the past. It does not appear
that there has ever been an improvement in the availability of this site.
When I need something from that site, it seems to be unavailable more than it
is available.
Here is the result of running tracert on the site, showing that the problem
is internal within Microsoft's own network:

Firstly, I would like to suggest/request that the important developer
downloads that have been moved to codeplex.com, such as enterprise library
and sql server sample databases, be made available in the MSDN subscriber
downloads.
Secondly, and more important right now, is that I need those downloads and
the site is not available. I am trying to understand some code from MSDN and
BOL that uses the sample databases. Before I can understand that code so
that I can use the information from BOL in the task I am working on today, I
need to have the sample databases for SQL Server 2005 for certain and,
hopefully, SQL Server 2008. As a MSDN subscriber, please tell me where I can
get those downloads other than the unavailable codeplex.com site.
Thanks,
Dale
Thank you for your uresponse, Gail. I did finally get the samples
downloaded. I attached them to my developer version of SQL Server 2005 by
copying the mdf and ldf files from the default installation in Express
Edition.
*Big sigh of relief*... That was two hours waisted. It probably would not
have been so frustrating if the issues with CodePlex availability didn't
happen so often.
Thanks again for your quick response.

Downgrading SQLServer to MSDE
I am pretty new to MSDE and am just researching options for writing a .NET
version of a desktop application (currently VB6 / Access).
There is a web version of our product available already which has a SQL
Server backend.
I am figuring that I will use MSDE so I can use all their Stored procedures
and as much code of theirs as possible.
What I am wondering is if I can get downgrade from SQL Server to MSDE ?
There's lots of information about upgrading, but nothing about downgrading.
Thanks

downgrading is a viable solution as long as you take into consideration all
relevant MSDE limitations..
2gb database size, limited replication support, no OLAP features, no
Reporting Services... and limited number of users scenarios... these are the
most relevant of them in my opinion... but the core features are all
available...

downgrade lisences
Is there a way to downgrade license for already installed and in use SQL
Server like:
1. Downgrade Enterprise Edition license from processor based to say 25 CAL
based.
2. Downgrade Enterprise Edition SQL Server to Standard Edition?
OR would the only solution be uninstall-install.
ThanksHi,
1. Downgrade Enterprise Edition license from processor based to say 25 CAL
based.
There is a undocumented was to do this by editing the registry.
You have to edit the registry using regedt32 :- (Not recommended at all)
\\Hkey_Local_Machine\Software\_Microsoft
\Microsoft SQL
Server\80\MSSQLLicenseInfo\MSS_QL8.00\Mode key\
Change the value to 0 and you get both options available.
2. Downgrade Enterprise Edition SQL Server to Standard Edition?
You can upgrade from a lower edition to higher edition. But to downgrade an
edition is not possible directly. The only solution is
to take a backup of all databases , Installl standard edition , latest
service pack and restore the databases back.
Thanks

You need to remove sql enterprise edition and install sql standard edition.
You could do the below steps:-
1. Backup and databases (can be used if attach fails)
2. detach all the databases from sql enterrise edition
3. Remove sql enterprise edition and install sql standard with same
directory structure
4. Apply the same service pack level
5. Attach the MDF and LDF files back in standard edition.
If attach fails you could restore the database using the backup files
performed in step-1
FYI, I have never done this type of downgrade.

Dotnet Code can be run in SQLServer in 2005-WHY?
I had recently undergone training in YUKON.As the first class begun,i came
to know that in 2005 version,it is possible to execute DOTNET Code in SQL
Server.I was surprised by this. My trainer answered that,it was due to
performance, scalability and many other "ABILITY" terms...
Could someone please give me better answers on this as to why there is a

Dose sqlserver 2000 support Array type?
HTH, jens Suessmeyer.
http://www.sqlserver2005.de
|||Can't you just use a table with one column as an array? You could create a table variable in this way that would act like an array, maybe add an identity column which would be your index, and the second column would be your data column. This is not an array, but can be used like one, for example you could iterate through it with a cursor or a while loop.|||Alternatively, use a large varchar, and biuld a string of your array elements, delimitering them with a set char, then use a while loop and CHARINDEX() to iterate through the elements.|||
There is no array type. Some of the other posters mentioned the work-arounds.
We'd be grateful if you could take a few moments and tell us what you're trying to do.
Thanks

domain user or local system account ?
My server is part of a W2K domain. What do you advice me as account to
run my SQL*Server, service started with a domain user account or as
local system ?
I need advices from a security point of view.
Thank's in advanceDepends on your requirements...
First, I would personally never recommend running SQL in a production
environment as Local System.
If the SQL proccess will ever need to connect to file shares on other
machines (like to backup data to remote location etc...) then you can either
use a domain account, or use local accounts with matching usernames and
passwords on the SQL server and any machine it may connect to.
If your SQL proccess will never connect to File shares, or similar resources
on the network, then you should run it with a Local User account on the box.
But of course, this is just my opinion.

And I also agree to not use Local System, all the more since this
account as network access into the same W2K domain (that was not the
case under NT).

domain user belonging to multiple windows group
Based on the scenario you described, DOMAIN\user should be a member of both roles ( LookupConfig role & AuditConfig role). You can use the following script to take a look to the login and user token on the current connection:
SELECT name, type, usage FROM sys.login_token ORDER BY type, name
SELECT name, type, usage FROM sys.user_token ORDER BY type, name
go
In the login token you should be able to look at all the server and Windows groups that are part of the token, while on the user token view you should be able to see the database roles and Windows roles that are part of the context.
The usage column will tell you how each row is used, typically it should be “GRANT OR DENY”, which means that row is being used to evaluate for both granted and denied permissions, while a “DENY ONLY” value means that only denied permissions will be honored.
Please let us know the results of this query. If you see both roles, my guess would be that either LookupConfig or AuditConfgi role has an explicit denied permission that is affecting the permission check.

It works now. It's actually my fault. I had one group defined initially and later when I add the other group, I simply disconnect and reconnect from the Management Studio. It did not pick up the new group. Today, I tried closing the Management Studio and reopen it, and it picks up both groups and roles. Your sql statements above showed me exactly what I expected - domin\user belongs to both LookConfig and AuditConfig Role.
However, I don't understand why it also belongs to the public role?
Also, the login_token output names like -
NT AUTHORITY\Authenticated Users, NT AUTHORITY\INTERACTIVE, NT AUTHORITY\NTLM Authentication, domain\None, \Everyone, etc...
What are these groups?
I am new to sqlserver and windows authentication. Any help would be much appreciated.
|||No problem, we are happy to help. The public role is a role that everyone in the system belongs to, think of the public as “Everyone”. If you grant any permission to public, everyone will get it. This behavior is automatic and cannot be changed.
Regarding the other Windows groups in the login token. To generate the SQL Server login token we take the token from the Windows client connection and get every group from it. You can double check it in Windows using the whoami tool (i.e. whoami /groups).
I hope this information helps. Let us know if you have any further question, we will be glad to help.
Thanks a lot,

Domain Question
We are going to configure a 2-node active/passive SQL
server cluster using W2003 Server Enterprise.
A requirement is that both nodes be a member of the same
domain.
We want to make one of these nodes the Primary Domain
Controller. Obviously if you lose that node in the cluster
you will lose the PDC! Can we make the other node a backup
domain controller? So, we can pull the plug on the PDC and
the BDC will now act as domain controller (and SQL server
will failover too)? Will that work
So is it a bad idea in a 2-node cluster to also have the
PDC and BDC be the nodes in the cluster?
Thanks.
We should not configure our cluster nodes as domain controllers; instead, we should use dedicated domain controllers. If we do configure our nodes in any combination of a primary and backup domain controller, it
could have direct implications for any SQL Server environment, as noted in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base articles
298570 BUG: Virtual SQL Server 2000 Installations May Fail if Installed to Windows 2000 Domain Controllers
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=298570
281662 Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003 Cluster Nodes As Domain Controllers
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=281662
In general, we should NOT install SQL Server 2000 on a domain controller.

Domain and windows authentication
We have a application that uses windows authentication to connect to sql
server. We have a domain and simply just create a login in sql server for
each user in the domain.
We have setup this application in the company that doesn't have domain.
We're not going to change the source of the application to accept sql server
authentication.
Can we still use the windows authentication to allow the users to log in?
Suppose that each user logs in his computer as administrator of that
computer. Can we prefix these administrators with the name of their
computers to create login in sql server and still use windows
authentication?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Amin
Microsoft SQL Server support only Domain Authentification, no Machine
Account Authentification (except the local machine of the sql server),
because Workgroups are not trustable.
Hope this helps,

1. Create a local account on the SQL Server machine that matches each
individual users local machine account. Make sure the password is the same

2. Create a login within SQL Server for each of these logins.
3. NT authentication should now work.
This could be difficult to administer becaues each time a user changes his
